Everyone easily gets lost in a strange place. If you are directionally challenged or don’t know how to see the map, a road sign is your savior!
This is all about the Korean address format which has now two different systems in a transition period because the Korean Address system has been renewed recently.
If you know how to read Korean address, you can easily find places that you want to visit in Korea even without a mobile device.
On top of that, if you want to book a private van and want to check your accommodation address in advance, please check if it is the exact address to complete your reservation.
I. Korean Address
1. BOTH old address system and new address system are still in use.
2. The English address needs to start with a street/building number in front.
Sometimes, even Google Map shows wrong addresses, without the building number like below.
Korean address example
You feel hard to recognize the difference between these two addresses above. Correct address starts with the building number! Let me explain the example with this map below!
Myeongdong 1-ga indicates an area, not a specific building.
Wrong address example: Myeongdong 1(il)-ga
The importance of building number!
Let’s see these two addresses again above!
Can you tell the difference between them? The Building number is the most important part of the address to actually get to the place!
Correct address format starts with building number!
Building number should be in front!
3. Don’t be confused with postal code
– Sometime you will see 5 numbers (12345) or 3-3 (123-456) as a part of the address. This is the postal code, NOT the building number or part of the address.
Please check the correct building number format below! Korean postcode is also recently changed like below. This format is only for a postal code.
<Wrong Address example = postal code>
5 digit number: 12345 Myeong-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul (X)
3-3 number: 122-333 Myeong-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul (X)
<Correct Address Format>
Maximum 3 digit number
– 1, Wausan-ro 32-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul (O)
– 12, Wausan-ro 32-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul (O)
– 123, Wausan-ro 32-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul (O)
2-1 number: 12-3 Myeong-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul (O)
3-2 number: 123-45 Myeong-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul (O)

III. Before you book a private van in INDIWAY,
Q. I still don’t know what is the building number 🙁
A. Please ① input the area name that you have (-dong/-ro) for less confusion like below.
② Type your accommodation/building name on ‘Memo’ section when you process your order.
In that case, we can add the address on our end.
