🔔Bell-Ringing in Bosingak
Bosingakwas named Jonggak in 1396, it is where close to Insa-dong today, and changed to Bosingak in 1895. On every New Year’s Eve, the clock rings thirty-three times to greet the New Year’s Day when it strikes 12 am. The bell-ringing originates from the thirty-three times the bell was rung around 4 a.m. when Bosingak Pavilion announced the opening of Sadaemun, or four main gates.
The Bosingak Bell-ringing ceremony will be redesigned as an event for Koreans and foreign tourists. Away from the civic-centered nature of the bell-ringing event, foreign tourists will now be able to ring the Bosingak bell without making reservations in advance. On the second floor of Bosingak to ring the bell, foreign visitors can appear until 11:40 a.m. on any day of the week except Monday. The second floor will also feature traditional Korean clothing, an opportunity for foreign tourists to try on traditional Hanbok and Joseon Dynasty uniforms, as well as photography.
